Everyone lives in the USA and/or cares about issues pertaining to the USA.
When exactly did Brazil step out of America? You mean I don’t live in America anymore? Now how do I refer to this continent, as it’s no longer South America? Oh dog!
Sure, Brazil is in South America, and South America is an America, but we both know that when most people use the phrase “[x]-American,” the “American” they’re most often referring to is of the U.S.
I am very sorry to inform you that what you said is only valid for people living in the USA. It may sound confusing to an American audience, but elsewhere “America” refers to the continent. There’s a whole world out of your country and everyone understands that “America” is the name of the continent - not that you would know that by watching your television or reading your newspapers, I know. But still, to make such an arrogant statement out of proud ignorance is just ignorant.
Your country is called UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. That you choose to call yourselves Americans, it is nice, but that doesn’t make the other people living in the same continent less “American” than you.
