It exists. However, half of Tumblr seems to think it is some kind of magic word that is the immediate cause of and solution to all social problems. Privilege is a symptom, guys, and fixating on it to the exclusion of root causes just leads to splintering and a defensive in-crowd mentality among progressive groups.

It bothers me to see intelligent and committed people fall into the trap of reifying one side-effect of global capitalism into a sort of ideological Big Other. Identifying coordinates of oppression is important and useful, but fetishizing victimhood is an ever-present risk when a group becomes caught up in quantifying the location of the cultural wound rather than leveraging oppression into praxis, or to (as many U.S. citizens did after 9/11) cling to the coppery tang of victimization as a sociological Talisman, as an excuse for insularity, judgement, and stubborn bellicosity.
